The new 2006 Penfolds Cellar Reserve Sauvignon Blanc delivers complex characters

Melbourne, 18 January 2007

The Penfolds Cellar Reserve range celebrates the addition of the hand made 2006 Penfolds Cellar Reserve Sauvignon Blanc, a new, elegant wine that offers complexity of character.

The Penfolds Cellar Reserve range came about in the mid 1990s as Penfolds Winemakers experimented in the Magill Estate Cellars with small batches of wines from varieties not traditionally associated with Penfolds.  For many years the white winemaking team trialled different yeasts and challenged conventional winemaking techniques for aromatic wines including the use of wild ' natural' ferments, a practice now widely celebrated.

Peter Gago, Chief Winemaker Penfolds said, "As a range these wines are handmade using techniques that enhance the varietal and textural characters.  Oliver Crawford and the team made the new Sauvignon Blanc wine in stainless steel aged on yeast lees for four months to gain complexity and give mouth feel without compromising true Sauvignon Blanc characters. Most Sauvignon Blancs fall over within a year of make, but we would expect this wine to grow in the bottle and drink well now to two years."

This wine is of great intensity and fullness and maintains elegance. A pale white with green straw hues, the 2006 Penfolds Cellar Reserve Sauvignon Blanc brims with freshly sliced snow pea aromas and hints of crushed gooseberries, all complimented by attractive, roasted hazelnut notes. Across the palate, a combination of ripe apple and lychee flavours are surrounded by subtle secondary characters of apple blossom and nutty tones.  This wine is perfect to serve as an aperitif or after dinner with a selection of your favourite regional cheeses.

Other wines in this range include:

• 2006 Penfolds Cellar Reserve Gewürztraminer (2006 Eden Valley Gewürztraminer - Second Release, a beautiful aromatic, dry style)
• 2005 Penfolds Cellar Reserve Pinot Noir (Continues the development of this very full-bodied "Penfolds" style)
• 2004 Penfolds Cellar Reserve Sangiovese (Spicy, savoury characters deliver in this wine from the celebrated 04 vintage)

The Penfolds Cellar Reserve range is sold from Penfolds Cellar Door, Magill Estate and Penfolds Cellar Door Nuriootpa and select restaurant and café's nationally, for approximately $12.00 a glass and $60 a bottle.
