National Packaging Covenant
The National Packaging Covenant (NPC) is Australia's unique approach to better management of consumer packaging. It is the co-regulatory forum that brings together Federal, state and local governments, industry and NGOs to work towards improved outcomes.
Foster's Group, through Carlton & United Breweries, was a strong and early supporter of the NPC. In 2000, Foster's extended the agreement to cover all of its Australian operations including wine. In 2006, Foster's re-committed to the second NPC for the period 2005 to 2010. This revised NPC includes specific recycling targets with an overall objective of lifting the 48% national recycling rate (2003) to 65% (2010), with a mid term review in 2008.
Foster's participates directly in the operation of the NPC through its membership of the Packaging Stewardship Forum (PSF) of the Australian Food and Grocery Council (AFGC). The PSF has a seat on the National Packaging Covenant Council, along with six other industry members, Local Governments, State Governments, the Federal Government and NGOs.
Foster's past Action Plans and Progress Reports are available on the Packaging Council of Australia site and the latest Action Plan and Progress Report are also available through the links

Environment Performance
Foster's has committed to making information on its environment performance publicly available. Some components of this information are provided through the Foster's Group Annual Report, our Sustainability Report and Australian reporting initiatives such as:
More recently Foster's has developed the systems to capture its global environmental impacts and is commencing reporting on a global basis.
Data that has been publicly available through the Foster's Annual Report for several years includes water and energy performance for our Australian beer business (formerly known as Carlton & United Beverages).
The energy performance of the non-wine business for 2003-2006 is shown below. Direct energy consumption is fuel consumed on our sites (gas, diesel, oil, coal) and indirect energy consumption is that consumed to produce the electricity we used.
